Hi i have troubles with active desktop here my setup:

Host: Windows XP
With vmware virtual machines:
Guests: Windows 2008 R2 Server Standard + Windows XP as Client PC

I already make a group policy for wallpaper but when i login in Client PC wallpaper doesnt change, do i need to install something to windows xp client pc? I tried group policy wizard to check but the wallpaper GPO says that its Empty and doesnt take it the client pc.

Hi.

A few things to check:

Is the Windows XP station joined to the domain?
If so, is the user in the OU that has the group policy applied?
Is the file specified for wallpaper accessible?
Is there anything in the event log that could show why it hasn't applied?
Have you run RSOP (Resultant Set Of Policy) to check that the policy is actually being applied?

Yes its joined in the domain named tkd.local

i make a group policy in group manager named Wallpaper, i make a shared folder named C:\wallapaper\1.jpg of course i put like \\server\folder\1.jpg

Well i run rsop.msc in windows xp guest i get this error:

RSoP data is invalid. Likely cuases are, data is corrup, data has been deleted or data has never been creaded.

Details:

Invalid namespace.

Group policy error.

And in windows 2008 server i try a Group policy Modeling and i get Wallpaper policy as Empty hows that i already fill active desktop settings.

And when i try a group policy wizard i get Access denied for PC1 that its client windows xp:

Did you create the wallpaper policy in the Computer or User configuration? The policy should be attached to an OU in Active Directory, and then the user or computer should be inside that OU to inherit the policy.

For the RSOP, try running it on "This Computer" on the XP client itself. It should then show you the policies that are applied.

Or, you could run GPResult in a command prompt.

Yes i have OU named tkdserver then inside another OU named Users and Computers then inside the user and computer. Is that wrong?

Is there anything in the eventlog on the XP client to say what's going wrong?

Also, try having the username different to the station name - this has caused problems for me in the past.

I am fairly new to server administration (usually i administer 3rd party server manaement software from RM, Ranger of Viglin Classlink... This is my first plain vanilla although i have experienced them before) and have just been handed a 2008 server which is running 30 XP client machines in a school.

I have been asked to create a different wallpaper so that when teachers, admin and pupils log on it is very quick and easy to spot the difference. i.e Admin plain black, teachers blue, pupils Green.

I have created a share with the wallpapers inside and the users are configured to have full rights to the folder. Inside the folder are 3 .bmp of the different colours created in paint.

I created 3 separate GPO's using UNC to the bmp's appropriatly. The GPO's are linked to the 3 user OU's admin, teacher and student. However strange things happen when the users log on.

Pupils's log on and default desktop is still there
Teacher and Admin change to blue background although i'm not sure if this is the bmp blue the teachers are supposed to be getting, as i changed them all to black to test and they still came up blue!

Any ideas greatly appreciated
