I'm using Symantec BackupExec 12.5 on Windows 2008 Standard SP1. Part of the selection list contains some virtual machines on a Windows 2008 Hyper-V server. Recenty, the backups have been failing with this error:

Quote:
V-79-57344-34070 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "VRTSRV::\\server.domain.local\Hyper-V?Virtual?Machine\Server". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

Snapshot provider error (0xE0008516): Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed.

Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.

I checked the links it suggested on the Symantec site but they didn't help.

Hey BeeQueue,

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm currently seeing the same issue, similar scenario.

Symantec BackupExec 12.5 (and now, as part of a Symantec recommendation, Backup Exec 2010)
Windows 2008 Standard SP1
Windows 2008 Hyper-V server
Guest machines running Windows Server 2003

Quote:
Backup- HOSTSVRNAMEV-79-57344-34070 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "VRTSRV::\\HOSTSVRNAME\Hyper-V?Virtual?Machine\GUESTSVRNAME - File Server". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

Snapshot provider error (0xE0008516): Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed.

Additional information: Machine is running GFI suite of products, which , as I've read while searching, appears to have some issues with Backup Exec.

Furthermore, on the particular guest machine that is having issues, after the backup dies with this error, I notice the Volume Shadow Copy Service is stopped.

Does this shed any extra information, or did you happen to get any extra information

It turned out someone had left some USB hard drives connected at the back of the server, and they were encrypted with TrueCrypt. As soon as I pulled them out the backups worked.
