I have installed 2008 server using all defaults.
Internet Explorer constantly fails when going to websites e.g. www.ibm.com. The page begins to load and IE reports that it has failed.
Firefox works fine.
The reason this is critical is that Updates are not being installed. Windows update searches for updates and does not find any.

Any help gratefully received.

What's your setup with regards to network and Internet connection? Does the server have the correct TCP/IP settings it needs, such as default gateway and DNS?

Thanks for the interest.
The NIC is setup as DHCP collecting the DNS and Gateway address on the way. They are accurate and reflect the setup correctly.
I have a windows 2008 R2 setup that works fine using the same DHCP based settings.

Has it actually picked up the details from DHCP? You can check this by running ipconfig in a command window.

Check that you can ping the gateway from that server. And can you ping the server that does work?

Also, are there any VLANs on your network that could be causing this?

Hi Dave.
Ipconfig shows that the DNS, Gateway and IP have all been picked up. I can ping both names and IPs e.g. Ping www.bbc.co.uk and ping 195.40.1.36

I can also Ping the server from other systems and ping other systems from the server.

MY network is very simple. It is a single 255.255.255.0 net and a single router/ADSL connection to the outside world.

I think that there is some setting somewhere that is stopping all from going out. I have also (for a test) reduced all security on IE on the server to virtually nothing.

This is the first 2008 32 bit server I have installed. All others are 64 bit and have gone in like a dream.

Do you have adequate virus protection on the server? Could something have infected it and stopped the browser from working?

Also, are there any group policies configured that may be applied and stopping it working?

I created the media from the ISO image I downloaded from MS. This was cut to a DVD on a virus protected OS (happens to be windows 7).

The server in question is not connected to a network anymore. I have resintalled the OS. The effect is the same out of the 'box' i.e. no changes. default of defaults.

I am beginning to think that the ISO image is knackered.

Did you manage to resolve this?
