So, my job is currently trying to start using Windows Sharepoint and I am really confused as to how it works. I don’t really understand how you access Sharepoint. You can’t install it on a “normal” computer running an operating system such as Windows 7 or Vista, correct? You need to install it on a machine running a server OS, right? So, I guess my real question relates to how Server OS’s work. I don’t understand how the users in my business are going to be able to use Sharepoint if you can’t even install the application on our computers because we aren’t running a Server OS. Do we just access Sharepoint online, because I know you use a browser to use it. I am just confused! Please explain anything you can! Thanks!

Hi Maha22.

Which version were you thinking of using? Microsoft SharePoint 2010 requires a Windows 2008 server environment, with SQL Server 2008. You can see the system requirements here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262485.aspx#section4

Once installed and running on a server, users can access it through a web browser, as it is all web-based.

Also, what's your setup - do you only have a peer to peer network, or do you have servers too?

Dave

SharePoint or Microsoft SharePoint products and technologies is a software, where web publishing and other collaborations are combined under a single server. Under this combination various activities like portals, wikis, blogs, content management etc. can be done simultaneously. It does various works together. Either its content management, intranet or any task, all can be done on the same server.
