Hello forum!

I am fairly new to SBS 2008 and have got a problem with the backup. I had a failed hard drive so managed to restore everything as planned. But now when I use the SBS Console to configure backups I get this error:

The wizard cannot retrieve backup settings. An unknown problem is preventing the wizard from retrieving backup settings. Please try again. If this problem persists, contact the person or company who provide you with technical support.

Anyone know what this is about?

Hello and welcome, Caz.

Can you provide a bit more information on this problem, such as any services not started, errors in the eventlog, how you carried out the restore, etc.

This might help us figure out a solution.

Dave

Hello Dave.

There are some services not started: Windows Internal Database and SQL (SBSMonitoring).

I used the Windows backup thing to restore all files on C: and then followed a Microsoft knowledge base article to restore the system state. It all seemed to work OK.

I have been trying to repair the Windows Internal Database but don't seem to be able to (I think it's something to do with that) so I'm no further forward yet.

Caz,

Have a look at this Microsoft guide for recovering the operating system: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755163.aspx - it explains how to boot from the Windows 2008 DVD and use the repair option to recover the entire OS from backup.

I'm guessing that some files were skipped when restoring files through the Windows backup.

Let us know how you get on.

Dave

Hello chaps. I did what you suggested and it worked. The only thing I had to do afterwards was repair the Exchange database with eseutil. I don't know why, I assumed the last backup was good before the old hard drive died. Oh well, at least it's all sorted now.

Thanks again.
