I have SBS 2008 and am trying to install some software that requires SQL Express 2005 (it installs it as part of the software installation) but fails with this error:

Cannot install SQL Express Server or the current one does not work properly

and then the installer closes. I think SQL is installed by default with SBS so do I need to configure it in any way?

TIA

What software are you installing? I haven't done much with SQL on SBS 2008 yet but I'd start by trying to create a new SQL instance by hand (installation should be on the installation CD if you have one) or download it from the Microsoft web site.

It's Maximizer CRM 10 but I've sussed it out now. The SQL Express included is 32bit and I have a 64bit server. I created a new instance called MAXIMIZER with the 64bit version and now it's installed OK.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction :D

The product is based on the Microsoft Server product family. Essentially, with Small business server (SBS) you get Microsoft server, Microsoft Exchange server, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Internet security and acceleration Server , for substantially less than the cost of buying the individual server products together with the required licenses. Furthermore, your get the full package neatly integrated by Microsoft, and it comes with automated setup routines to help you get 4 powerful server products working together.

SBS 2008 installs all of its features using a single volume (C:), there are tools available to move some of the data to other locations, but a number of folders that remain in the C: volume can continue to grow if left unchecked, this can potentially eat all the available disk space on the C: drive. Once the C: drive reaches certain low space thresholds, some services will stop functioning properly on the server, while others will change their behavior to prevent data loss. Usually, administrators realize they have a problem when e-mail flow is impacted, under low disk space conditions, due to the Exchange Back Pressure features, mail flow will stop.
