Before installing Active Directory on Windows Server 2008, you first need to install Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) role on the server. AD DS is essential because this role enables your Windows 2008 server to work as a Domain Controller.

Methods for Installing AD DS

You can install AD DS by using three different methods:

Method 1: Using Server Manager

1. Open 'Server Manager'.
2. Expand 'Roles' and click the 'Add Roles' link.
3. Go through the information given on the 'Before You Begin' page of the 'Add Roles Wizard' and click 'Next.'
4. On the 'Select Server Roles' page, select 'Active Directory Domain Services' and click 'Next'.
5. Go through the information given on the 'In the Active Directory Domain Services' page and click 'Next'.
6. On the 'Confirm Installation Selections' page information related to installing the Active Directory Domain Services role is given. Go through it, and then click 'Next'.
7. After the process completes, click 'Close'.

Thanks.
