Hi Shishir.

Is this a new server in a new domain, or do you have an existing Windows 2003 domain and you want to add a new Windows 2008 server to it?

Dave

Do you have any experience with setting up a new Windows domain (200 or 2003) and the steps involved? If not, this checklist might be a good place to start:

Checklist: Deploying a Windows Server 2008 Forest Root Domain

It will walk you through your Active Directory structure design, settinging up DNS and creating the forest root domain. The page contains links to step by step guides for each of this and is fairly easy to follow. If you need help with any of it just post back here :)

Hi

Thanks for reply.

Yup i have sound knowledge about how to install win 200 ,win 2003 and win 2008 server with all features .but i have never intergrated file server with domain server .

So do we need to join the file server to domain or we need to do some other steps .

What i want is that all the user should have domain and file server ,so that they can save there data on file server and at the same time they should be able to use domain enviroment .

There shouldn't be any reason why you can't do all that on one box. Just use the Initial Configuration Tasks wizard to configure the file server and Active Directory. Then when the workstations are joined to the domain you can start sharing folders on the server.

How many users do you have? Will you be using DFS, etc? You don't want to overload one server with too much work.

Hey thanks for reply.

Actually i joined this compnay just now and they already purchased one HP proliant file server and one windows 2008 server .
And now they want to use both server with integration with each other.

So if i make a domain and join that file server to that domain .then is there any way by which AD and file server can be integrated.
So that if user login to domain they have drive on which they will save there data and that data will intially will saved on file server.

One more thing they purchased servre with 5 user license and they have also purchased 50 additional license ,so can you me guide me how to use those extra licenses.

You could just make the file server a member of the domain so that when people login they will have access to any shares on the file server.

Or, depending on the number of users and load on the server, you could make the second server a domain controller too. That would balance the load for logons as well as give access to the shares.

What edition of Windows 2008 Server do you have?

Hi

Thanks for the reply .

We have win 2008 std 32bit server and file server is HP proliant ml 350g6.

So what you Suggest is it a good practice to make file server a 2nd Dc in present system.

Can you please guide me how to make file server with domain like i told you i want all user should access there data from shared drive with share folder permission only.

Best practice would be to have the first server as a Domain Controller, and the second server as a member server (with no Active Directory).

Add the File Server role to the second server and then it will guide you through setting up shared folders. Once created, you can just right-click the folder, choose properties and on the security tab click add then browse the domain to add the users that require access.

Hope this helps.
